5) Dehd - Loner

First single from album Flower Of Devotion out 17/7...
“I want nothing more than to be a loner,” Emily Kempf sings early on Flower of Devotion, the new album by Chicago trio Dehd. It’s a startling admission coming from a songwriter who, just a year ago on Dehd’s critically acclaimed Water, wrote eloquently about the joys and pains — more than anything, the necessity — of love, compassion, and companionship. But then, “admission” isn’t really the right word here, given the stridency of Kempf’s tone. “Loner” is a declaration.

The record ups the ante on Dehd’s sound & filters in just enough polish to bring out the shining and melancholy undertones in Jason Balla and Emily Kempf’s songwriting, even as it captures them at their most strident. Balla’s guitar lines at times flirt with ticklish cosmic country, while at others they reflect the dark marble sounds of Broadcast. Kempf, meanwhile, establishes herself as a singer of incredible expressive range, pinching into a high lonesome wail, letting loose a chirping “ooh!,” pushing her voice below its breaking point and letting it swing down there. When she and Balla bounce descending counter-melodies off one another over McGrady’s one-two thumps, or skitter off over a programmed drum pad, they sound like The B-52s shaking off heartache.

What makes Flower of Devotion so impressive is how its creation seems to have strengthened its creators, both as individuals and as a unit, even as they’ve stared down their own limitations. It’s also striking just how much fun they seem to be having in the process. “It’s okay to be lighthearted in the face of despair,” Kempf says. It’s a theme that runs through the album, from the opening back-and-forth build of “Desire” to the click-clacking chorus of “Haha,” which finds them deflating their own history. Flower of Devotion was recorded in April and August of 2019 in Chicago. It will be released on Fire Talk Records on July 17th 2020.

4) Monteagle - A Colorful Moth

Monteagle is the solo moniker of Brooklyn based (Tennessee native) singer songwriter and composer Justin Giles Wilcox. Known primarily for scoring the critically acclaimed short Documentary Twins Days for the New Yorker and for his production and songwriting for the ambient folk duo Nassau, Monteagle sees Wilcox diving further into the uncharted territory of southern influenced experimental psych folk. “A Colorful Moth” a new EP from Wilcox is steeped in vivid imagery or as Paste Magazine describes “tremulous, bare-souled vocals, which are as haunted and alluring as the caves that riddle the rocky hills of the band’s hometown.”

Justin tells the tale of “A Colorful Moth” better than anyone could...

“A while back I hit a little bit of a rough patch. I had just wrapped up a very emotionally draining project, My freelance work was drying up, My mental health was at an all time low, all this amongst some tumultuous personal issues. In the midst of all of the chaos I took a walk, and ended up sitting at a park right outside of my apt in Brooklyn. While I was just sort of staring blankly, a Butterfly flew up and landed next to me on a bench. Without even blinking I looked at it and thought to myself, “This fucking butterfly, there’s no real beauty in it, it’s just a colorful moth”. I kind of lost it. It’s like my mind became clear. I started-laugh crying and realized how casually destructive I was being and accepted that my situation was mainly my own doing. Afterwards, I felt this huge sense of relief and I immediately started writing these songs.”

This EP is unique in that it was written and recorded sequentially. As in each musical idea begot the next. If you listen there are little pieces of the previous song in the next idea. The lyrics are a mish-mash, a direct stream of consciousness, and recollection of various hallucinogenic trips Justin had been on. There’s something soothing in the way that sound and words dance around each other in a surreal exploration of mortality in relation to reality.

”A Colorful Moth” is a sibling component to an upcoming full length scheduled for early 2021.

3) Secret Shame - Dissolve

Secret Shame has one constant to the way they write music: it’s ever-changing. This North Carolina four-piece doesn’t rely on just a single songwriter. Their collective writing process leads to an eclectic yet expansive sound of a band who's not willing to pigeonhole itself into a single subgenre of goth or post-punk.
With Secret Shame’s newest single, Dissolve, they’ve reached into an unknown territory and grabbed hold of new sounds while still managing to evoke the same feelings of previous releases. Lena Machina's (she/her) vocals, which have the ability to expand from manic and feverish to soft and soothing, harmonize and twist around the instruments. Underneath the pretty facade lies self destructive lyrical content, instruments that bite each other, and hard emotions that don’t ever fade.
Secret Shame has never held back from difficult topics or societal downfalls, and this is just as relevant on their new single as it is on their debut album, Dark Synthetics.

Billie (she/they) creates sparkling guitar melodies that ebb and flow, sometimes lying beneath Matthew’s (he/him) skillfully eccentric basslines, and at other times breaking through the thick fog of reverb. The rhythm between the bass and drums is driving, often in unison, but at times more of a conversation as Nathan's (he/him) drumming not only lays the foundation but establishes layers of its own. Shiny synth melodies dance through the tracks and Lena spits out metaphorical lyrics about mental illness and manipulation. Secret Shame may nod to 80s post-punk and new wave, but the sound they’ve created is distinctly their own.

As evident on their 2019 full-length Dark Synthetics, Secret Shame creates sonically driven landscapes painted with colorfully powerful lyrics, bouncing between both chaotic and calm moments that are equally destructive in message. Dark Synthetics saw Secret Shame creating a space for you to get lost in -- the kind where you’re free to contemplate and relate, taking each song’s essence and shaping it to fit your own life and experience. It’s a gothic punk sound not just to revel in, but to think critically through -- something only carefully crafted music can do. Whether the songs are melancholic or angry, fast-paced or slow, the fervent need to communicate through music is a commonality between their diverse catalogue and makes for powerful live performances.

Dissolve was recorded November 2019 at The Ward in Richmond, VA. The self-released 7” to accompany the singles will be available on June 5th, 2020.

5) Spice - First Feeling

As a collective thought, SPICE’s self-titled debut album offers a deliberate isolation of pain as interpreted through different vehicles. Less than 30-minutes in length, the record diverts from a singular mood, tempo, or delivery, instead focusing on orchestrating emotional drain as single impulses—fast, slow, driving, simple, and layered—that coalesce in their machinations. At its core, SPICE’s debut is wired together by brawny and brittle guitars, lock-groove rhythms, and vocals announce each moment and mood.

Formed in 2018 and based across California, each members’ roots are in the North Bay of San Francisco. Comprised of Ross Farrar (vocals) and Jake Casarotti (drums), both of Ceremony, along with Cody Sullivan (bass), Ian Simpson (guitar), and Victoria Skudlarek (violin), SPICE’s sound pulls from the sense of melody and drive inherent to Bay Area pedigree, peppered with modernity and awash with an anthemic haze. The hook is in the connection as much as melody, with each song building its inner narrative and exploration of affliction.

Traversing guitar-driven indie-pop and call-to-action impulse, SPICE balances their urgency by interspersing violin melodies and layers, creating depth without oversaturating the heart of each song. Building complexity with laser focus, Spice shares the authoritative drive of Jawbreaker, J Church, The Horrors, and Fugazi, set in their own world of unrest. The treatment of each song is a statement that informs the whole - anecdotes that can bleed slowly or swirl quickly. In a sense, the album itself is an entire song, with each track becoming the verses, choruses, and interludes that narrate its intent. Ending with the final track they workshopped for the album titled “I Don’t Wanna Die in New York,” the album ends with a punch before winding back into meditation.

Honed over late nights at Panda Studios in Fremont, California with producer Sam Pura (Basement, The Story So Far, Self Defense Family), SPICE spent hours tweaking it until it became a little world formed by what they refer to as “the power of groupthink.” Sprinkled with field recordings—audio snapshots from the member’s every-day-lives—the record offers an intimate twist that builds on its theme of a single thread that connects everything with continuity, making it a single organism with as many depths as questions.

PREORDER - Release Date: July 17, 2020

Since 2005, Ross Farrar has been the lead singer of Ceremony, the Bay Area punks who have progressed from feral hardcore to stately, stylish postpunk over the course of their existence. Last year, Ceremony released their album In The Spirit Now, and the lead single “Turn Away The Bad Thing” continues to rip extremely hard. But now Farrar has a new project that he’s only just unveiled: A band called Spice.

Spice also features Ceremony drummer Jake Casarotti, as well as members of bands like Sabertooth Zombie and Creative Adult. This summer, they’ll release their self-titled debut album, which they recorded with Basement/Self Defense Family producer Sam Pura.

Thus far, Spice have only shared one song, but it’s along the lines of the kind of things that Pura’s past collaborators have done. “First Feeling” is a grand, anthemic song that draws on the aesthetics of DIY hardcore while reaching for something bigger and slower. It sounds a bit like what might’ve happened if the Rites Of Spring had covered Echo & The Bunnymen. Check it out below.

Seanie boy - gitter

Tyler Lotts - glitter

Tyler 2 Mcarthy - synths, but hes better at gitter

Right before the shutdown was announced in LA because of COVID-19, a bit before social distancing became mainstream and bars were still open, I went out dancing. There were about 10 people. It felt pretty eerie, especially for a spot so heavily crowded usually. So during quarantine stuck in a studio, decided to write 'Dancing Is Dangerous In Los Angeles', which was inspired by that experience.
