Singles of the Week (08//22)

1) Dreamwreck - Death Drive

After his debut album “Cruise Utopia” released in 2020 on Passat Continu, the electronic composer Canaan Balsam signs its second venture in ambient and new age soundscapes through Dreamwreck, a not so unexpected collaboration with Cosima Cobley Carr, with whom he had already worked before, counting several features in Cruise Utopia. Dreamwreck combines ethereal electronic soundscapes with traditional instrumentation and collage elements, including melodic vocals, spoken word, found or archival sounds and field recordings. Through the calming, angelic vocals of Cobley Carr, Death Drive is a four-track ambient piece that transports us to our deepest dreams, only brought back to reality by calming but nonetheless assertive declamations from the English artist. The EP names itself after a concept derived from psychoanalysis – “Faced with destructive behaviour and elements in our psychological experience which seem to work against us, Freud inferred the idea of an essentially destructive instinct that underlies human psychology” - says Cosima Cobley Carr. Each track of this album reflects on human behaviour, such as the ever-morphing relationships in “Fade to Fade”, the uncanny presence of death and destruction in life in “Appears to be Living”, and the lament to a...

5) SPICE - Any Day Now

"Any Day Now" is from SPICE's sophomore album, "Viv", out May 20, 2022 on Dais Records. Pre-order on limited edition vinyl, CD and digital at: https://found.ee/viv The second LP by California rock n roll unit SPICE expands their palette of damaged anthems and addiction poetics with a more bristling, visceral sound, distilled from years in the trenches of bands, break-ups, and breakdowns. Singer Ross Farrar explains their chemistry succinctly: “We all got in a room and this is what came out.” Viv is named for a precursor project of bassist Cody Sullivan and violinist Victoria Skudlarek, but also alludes to broader notions of vividness, sonic, visual, and otherwise. Engineered by Jack Shirley and mixed/mastered by Sam Pura in Oakland, the mix achieves that rare balance of every element being elevated but distinct, with voices, strings, and drums each given space to blaze parallel paths. Opener “Recovery” captures SPICE at their stormy, weathered best, booming drums and East Bay riffs skidding out in a rockslide of rapture, regret, and bruised melody (“You sacrifice perfect days to laugh through the night / you have to get out of bed / and it’s hard / and it’s hard / it’s so hard to admit”), peaking in Ian Simpson’s poignant single-note vibrato guitar solo; Farrar agrees: “The guitar says what we cannot.” Other tracks embrace the group’s shredded pop potential (“Any Day Now,” “Dining Out,” “Live Scene”) and their speedway ripper mode (“Threnody”), with detours into oblique instrumentals (“Melody Drive”) and orchestral balladeering (“Ashes In The Birdbath”). But what unites and ignites these songs across different energies and arrangements is their specific sense of emotion. Rawness refined into reckonings, approaching truth, born of cold mornings, bad luck, and too many wrong turns. Waking up where you’re not supposed to be, living a life you don’t recognize. The album ends with no end to its narrative, still fighting, still slipping. Farrar calls “Climbing Down The Ladder” a “relapse song – telling people you’re okay but you’re still fucking up.” Heartbeat drums march under heartbroken guitars in an elegant downward spiral of defeat, delusion, and desperate hope, dreamed more than believed: “I said it was the last time / but I was up so high / 100 miles / 1000 miles / no me in sight / I saw into the next life / I wasn’t dead / I felt so vivid in the next life.” "Any Day Now"

"The hope at the end of the tunnel concluding this album," says APTBS bandleader Oliver Ackermann. "I went through such a traumatic experience while writing this record and yet there were people there to help me through so this song is about appreciating and thanking them." In the latest video from director Gabriel Carrer (FOR THE SAKE OF VICIOUS, THE DEMOLISHER), A woman unexpectedly encounters and reaches out to a shapeshifting entity in the most unlikely manner. This entity befriends her after it was left for dead, and gives her the support needed to help battle her own anxiety and inner demons.

5) Young Prisms - Self Love

New single from Young Prisms' 3rd album 'Drifter' out March 25th on Fire Talk Drifter is a record that finds steadiness in the embrace of uncertainty. Young Prisms have always delivered stories that have remained mostly shrouded in a dreamlike state, the kind of dreams where you never quite get to where you’re aiming to go, and the ones which unravel in melancholy when you open your eyes and reality sets in. With their first new music in ten years, the band explores the tension and release that comes with bringing your head down from the clouds and making sense of the tangible entanglements that make up everyday existence. "You’ve spent your whole life wondering if you’ll ever live up to your own expectations, but one day realize that it’s ok to just be a normal, boring human.
You’re used to running away from life because you hate yourself and now you are pleasantly surprised by a new feeling to let go and accept yourself,” explains lead vocalist Stefanie Hodapp. Comprised of Hodapp (vocals, synthesizer), Matthew Allen (vocals, guitar, bass, synthesizer, drum programming), Giovanni Betteo (bass, guitar, synthesizer, drum programming) and Jordan Silbert (drums)

Singles of the Week (06//22)

1) Go With Strangers - Finding Ikigai

"Go With Strangers" is a alternative-rock band, founded by Eugene San.
Never one to want, or ever thought to step into the spotlight as a front man of a band. Alternative Rock band “Go With Strangers” was a music project that guitarist and producer Eugene San pondered long upon, at the beginning. “All my life, I hated hearing my own voice on recordings.” Eugene confessed. Caught up in meddling with ambient and electronic music, during the few years before 2021 - It all began with a ‘full-band format‘ YouTube cover song, that Eugene tried singing on during the lockdown in 2021, which reignited his passion for writing guitar-driven music. Not being able to find a compatible vocalist for the project with the inconvenience of lockdown, Eugene decided to face his social anxiety head-on, picking up the mic for the first time in his life. Fully self-produced and engineered, the debut EP “Finding Ikigai” speaks of finding one’s inner happiness, and purpose in life. “Iki-gai” is a Japanese concept that means your ‘reason for being’. To be able to do something that brings pleasure, and also the fulfillment that follows when one pursues their passion in life. Finding Ikigai EP is a mélange of emotions, ambience, and dreams. “Writing this new EP was a beautiful escape from reality for me,” said Eugene. “Into another epic, and nebulous world with metallic but lush terrains. Vast landscape of lilac tinted clouds that stretches far beyond the eye can see, with the emergence of a short-lived passing storm... I am grateful for the experience.” If you’re a fan of Alternative Rock, and Post-Rock, this could be an exciting new EP to check out early this year. credits releases February 11, 2022

4) The Asteroid No.4 - Set Your Sights

New single from album Tones Of The Sparrow out 25/3/2022
The Asteroid No.4 is an American band based north of San Francisco, CA. Originating from Philadelphia in the late 1990s, the A4 remain an active studio and live act who are considered stalwarts of the modern “psych” genre. Known for their prolific discography of reverb-drenched recordings and liquid-projected live performances, the band is often categorized as “neo-psychedelic” or “shoegaze”. Happily in acceptance of often made comparisons to acts like Spacemen 3 or “Paisley Underground” kingpins, The Rain Parade; the band indeed has a sound all its own.

5) Trentemøller - Like A Daydream (feat. Lisbet Fritze)

Trentemøller’s new album 'Memoria' out 11/2/2022 seems to exist at the confluence of inspiration, coincidence, and maybe even a little bit of the supernatural.
On 'Like A Daydream' Lisbet Fritze's earnestly delivered vocals are buoyed up by carillon guitar, tethered to a relaxed drum shuffle, by a progression of bass chords.
