Singles of the Week (40//22)

1) Suave Punk - Apathy Patrol 

 

 News from indie rock Orange, California project Justin Kim... Self confidence is a dubious thing. As far as I can remember, humiliation was and still is one of my greatest fears. I define humiliation not only as feelings of embarrassment but as the visceral, ugly, and destructive force that plunges one into the darkest of feedback loops. Everyone, I believe, to some extent are aware of the repercussions of humiliation as it means that you have been subject to utter rejection from society and alienation from those you see as your own. As hard as I try to find hope in my future and acceptance from my world, I find myself constantly second guessing myself in everything I do and create: many times unwarranted. I am not the heir of elites. I am not a member of academia. I am not a natural careerist. Who am I to speak at all? I am a nobody, how dare I? The most dangerous aspect of this kind of thinking are not the thoughts themselves, but the subsequent loss of feeling altogether: apathy in its purest sense. Quite honestly these thoughts are swirling in my head every day, some days more violently than others. I fear this greatly as the only things which offer any metric for introspection are those same emotional faculties which both inflict pain or bring joy. Without any of these, your humanity is in question. Apathy Patrol is my attempt at reminding myself of this. I know the road to accepting myself is far and expansive and sometimes I wonder if there is even a destination at all. Though it's in my own nature to double-think and second guess my own value, I can’t allow myself to fall into the dulling lull of apathy. In the very end it's a practice not just an ideal and I’m willing to accept that at least.

 News from Brighton, East Sussex, United Kingdom indie-rock band

CIEL met on the South Coast of England where they distilled their differing influences into grunge-pop finery. Early on the band caught the eye of BBC 6’s Steve Lamacq who included them as a spotlight artist on his show. They gained further radio plays across the UK and US (BBC 6 Music, KEXP, WFUV) as well as loyal support from online publications like CLASH Magazine, Under The Radar and Earmilk.
