Singles of the Week (04//21)

1) Pale Blue Eyes - Motionless / Chelsea

Debut Double A side single from Totnes,
UK indiepop trio Pale Blue Eyes are a new horizon-wide pop group based in the remote rural hinterlands of South Devon. Hey! Thats like us!! The single was mixed and mastered by Dean Honer (The Moonlandingz, Róisín Murphy, I Monster, Human League, International Teachers of Pop). The single’s side A is clean-lined, mechanised pop – like the Bunnymen’s Will Sergeant firing up at his most raga-frenetic and then joining Neu! for a journey to the far side of the pop Moooooonnn. Side AA is an emotive, wide-screen sci-fi ballad, like these kids have somehow gained access to the wondrous Felt’s wondrous Primitive Painters, or something. “We’ve recently been building our own studio,” says PBE singer/guitarist Matt Board. “It’s down by the River Lud, just south of Dartmoor here in Devon, where we’ve been working away. Our debut album is ready and recorded, waiting to go…” The single is being released with financial support from Devon’s New Lion Brewery and GroCycle mushrooms. Pale Blue Eyes are further sponsored by Devon’s Green Funeral Company, who are also part of Callender, Callender, Cauty & Drummond Undertakers, the funeral directors for the MuMufictation afterlife memorial programme. Cauty and Drummond are, of course, also know for their work with The KLF and The Justified Ancients Of MuMu. Pale Blue Eyes will be accompanied by a bespoke Pale Blue Ale from South Devon’s New Lion Brewery.

3) Soft Kill - New Age / Fatigue

Portland post-punks Soft Kill are releasing their new album Dead Kids, R.I.P. City on November 20 via Cercle Social Records/Cobraside), but first they're releasing a tribute 7" to UK punk/Oi! vets Blitz on TKO Records.
They're covering both songs from the classic 1983 single "New Age" and its B-side "Fatigue," and it'll include artwork by original Blitz bassist Mackie, who also designed the artwork for Blitz's first three singles. The "Fatigue" cover features guest vocals by Jerry A from Poison Idea, with drums by Adam Bulgasem (Black Mountain, Dommengang, Holy Sons). "After we posted the 'New Age' cover, Mark Rainey from TKO / Cascade Record Pressing reached out with the insane idea of recreating the 7” with Jerry A (Poison Idea) doing vocals for 'Fatigue,'" Soft Kill tells us. "I’m pretty sure I told him 'yeah, you put that together and we’re down' and within a couple days it was confirmed. If that wasn’t bucket list enough, Mackie from Blitz who also did all those original drawings for the 7” covers stepped up to do the art. Probably the coolest project we’ve ever been part of." They released the "New Age" cover back in May, and we're now premiering the "Fatigue" cover. Soft Kill turn both songs into their own gothy, morose post-punk style, and the legendary Jerry A fits right in. Listen to both and watch the trailer

Singles of the Week (03//21)

1) Tunic - Fade Out

New single from Winnipeg, Manitoba noise rock trio Winnipeg is cold. Ice cold. And judging by the the emotional brawn and hardcore might of the three-piece Tunic, it can get very very dark. Winnipeg’s Tunic explores that darkness on the band’s new album Exhaling. Across songs like the title track, “Invalid” and “Fade Out,” the trio of David Schellenberg (Guitar / Vocals), Rory Ellis (Bass) and Dan Unger (Drums) use their visceral art punk approach to explore themes related to coping with the illness of a loved one, the dark side of creativity and dealing with toxic friendships. “I’m not one to write about situations/emotions that I haven’t lived through,” remarks frontman/guitarist David Schellenberg. “I need that catharsis of screaming about these things over and over again. These are all things that have unfolded in my life and I use Tunic as a coping mechanism.” Tunic was born of spite in– formed after founder David Schellenberg was told he “wasn’t good enough” for another band leading to a subsequent decision to follow his own path. From there, Tunic sought out a sound inspired by the melodic approaches of Quicksand and Superchunk, venom and heartache in Converge and controlled chaos behind Botch. Since their 2016 debut 7”, Tunic have criss-crossed the globe relentlessly, zigging and zagging as part of more than a dozen jaunts in North America and Europe while logging shows with a varied lot like Ken Mode, Single Mothers and even Hank Wood and the Hammerheads. Tunic’s touring bloodlust eventually conjured a debut LP in 2019, Complexion and not surprisingly, the band followed its release with eleven weeks of touring. The first single, “Exhaling,” serves as a taste of demolition before Tunic’s next full length hits in 2021. This new song, and the legion of firepower on the band’s previous works, serve as fair warning of the brutality that awaits.

2) Teen Creeps - Fall Out

'Fall Out' single by Teen Creeps New album 'Forever' out January 22nd 2021 on PIAS If you’ve heard anything about TEEN CREEPS, it’s that the Belgian three piece loves the 1990s. Their sound is reminiscent of bands that era, like DINOSAUR JR, SUPERCHUNK or SONIC YOUTH with fuzzy guitars, melancholic vocals and fast-paced drums. That combo hit home on their 2018 debut BIRTHMARKS (PIAS Recordings), that garnered interest from UK press outings like Upset Magazine, DIY Mag, Clash Music and GoldFlakePaint. Even getting some four stare reviews. But on ‘FOREVER’ they do not simply repeat the formula. The fuzzy guitars and angsty lyrics are still here on ‘FOREVER’. But TEEN CREEPS are okay with slowing down, letting in some more melody and overall maturing their sound. Closing track ‘CRASH/LAND’ is the closest they’ll ever get to a ballad and their longest track yet. ‘DEFENDER’, ‘TOUGHEN UP’ and ‘BROTHERS’ also let in the feels and turn down the pace. “I think we just got a little more mellow as we got older”, says guitarist Joram De Bock. “I’m just less angry”, says vocalist-bassist Bert Vliegen. “On ‘BIRTHMARKS’ I was fuelled by anger and frustrations, now I’ve learned to let go and accept certain failings I have. Because they will always be there. Yes, forever.” After recording their debut in London with producer Rory Attwell (Veronica Falls, Yuck, The Vaccines), TEEN CREEPS stayed closer to home this time around. They recorded ‘FOREVER’ in Audioworx, a studio in the Netherlands, with their long-time friend and collaborator Jesse Maes. Ramses Van den Eede (drums): “Jesse recorded all of our early stuff and mixed the last record, so he’s a natural fit. Plus, it made the recording sessions a lot of fun. That’s something we want to celebrate in the artwork and title of the record. ‘TEEN CREEPS FOREVER’ is like a battle cry, but also a celebration of our friendship. We even put a heart on the cover. We’re not afraid to get corny.” credits releases January 22, 2021 Recorded in May 2019 at Audioworkx in Hoogeloon. Produced and mixed by Jesse Maes. Engineered by Michiel De Maeseneer. Co-engineered by Cis Van Robaeys. Mastered by Jack Shirley at The Atomic Garden in San Francisco. All songs written by Teen Creeps. Joram De Bock: guitar & backing vocals, Bert Vliegen: bass, lead vocals, Ramses Van den Eede: drums. Additional vocals on ‘Brothers’ by Loes Gerits. All lyrics by Bert Vliegen.

3) Stephen's Shore - Brisbane Radio

New material from Stockholm, Sweden indie / jangle pop band Following on from 2016's "Ocean Blue" EP and 2018's "September Love" LP, Stockholm's Stephen's Shore are back with a brand new EP entitled "Brisbane Radio. Stephen’s Shore started out as a two man project by Viktor Sjödin and Erik J Undéhn in 2011. They had both been playing in other bands before but when they started to write songs as Stephen’s Shore they felt that their musical expressions was a perfect match. When Jimmy Ottosson, P.A Blomqvist and Mattias Berqvist joined the duo Stephen’s Shore became a full band. What joins these five together musically is the love for jangly guitar, moody pop songs, skateboarding and if there was a musical anthem for California it would be a perfect description for the inspiration that drives Stephen’s Shore in their songwriting and musical atmosphere. credits releases January 22, 2021 All songs by Stephen’s Shore. Recorded by Stephen’s Shore and Johan Gustavsson at Ingrid Studios. Mixed by Embee Mastered by Philip Granqvist Artwork and Design by Walse

4) Ulrich Schnauss & Jonas Munk

First new music from Ulrich Schnauss & Jonas Munk in four years.
"Asteroid 2467" is the first single off the forthcoming collaborative full length (their third), out in spring 2021. "Asteroid 2467 (single version)" is an edited version of an album track, whereas "Afterglow" is exclusive to this release.
Ambient and introspective in nature, but with a kinetic, polyrhythmic energy pushing it forward. There's a floating quality to Ulrich's synthesizer washes and Munk's guitar patterns, yet the two tracks are anchored by pulse and compositional direction.
The duo brings their individual strengths to the table, yet the music transcends any of their previous work conceptually.
There are echoes of blissed-out new age music and kosmische from the 1970s and 1980s, as well as traces of shoegaze-era abstraction and leftfield electronica. But ultimately there's no off-the-rack category that fits it. It exists in its own rarefied space.

5) Fawning - Wait

New material from Oakland, California dream pop group from their debut album ILLUSIONS OF CONTROL out Feb 12th. For fans of Julee Cruise, Slowdive, The Cure and peak-era 4ad. Fawning is a goth'y dream pop trio from the Bay area featuring Cheyenne Avant (who is also in Night School). Their music is equal parts serene and beautiful and at times, borderline creepy. Perfect music for autumn. Cheyenne and Devin Nunes met many years ago while playing shows together with their previous projects. Debut EP Too Late release 2019.

5) The Chisel - Come See Me/ Not The Only One

New EP / 7" from London punk band Chisel
this, Chisel that" -- it's on my phone, it's on my hard drives, it's on my turntable, it's on my t-shirt, it's on my Instagram, it's on my blogspot, it's tattooed on my forehead, my own parents renewed their wedding vows to "Rat Running Scared."
I pressed stop. I unplugged my headphones, turned down the volume, and snapped that god forsaken single in HALF. Enough was enough! But see me, yeah.
Once the music stopped only one thought rang through my head: What Have I Done? Where once there was explosive energy there was now a void. Lucky for me, the 5 loveable lads from Blackpool, Croydon, Acton, Chingford, and Guildford KEPT IT MOVIN, and just when I thought all was lost they brought me back in.
Three more blasts of full fat extra saturated deep fried limb swinging confrontational uplifting chisel chiselling punk for that special space in your life. Enough said? No. Cos they've done it again. (Jonah Falco)

Singles of the Week (01//21)

1) True Faith - As Much Nothing As Possible

New material from Boston, Massachusetts darkwave / post-punk synth band. releases January 8, 2021
Produced by Lestat Ali Recorded by True Faith at the House of God
Mixed and mastered by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios
Album artwork by Lauren N. Bailey “Benson and Moyer’s time spent here, arriving from Portland, Oregon, and rural Eastern Pennsylvania, respectively, saw not only the formation of the band, but the crystallization of the True Faith sound to the point where it falls today: a disaffected twirl through the shadows of post-punk, darkwave, and electronic-pop, but with a cerebral center based in the emotive state of the human condition. Like a proper Bostonian, it reveals its different layers the longer you spend time with it, and its affection slowly begins to glow from a core that is remarkably gentle and affirming. And whether that’s by intent or not is beside the point. The emotion rooted in the True Faith sound is one reflected by Benson and Moyer’s experiences here in medical school and dalliances with the unforgiving and despondent Boston winter. Ironically, a break from studies brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic gave the pair time to flesh out what would become their debut album, the forthcoming “As Much Nothing As Possible” LP, due out in early 2021 via à La Carte Records.
Buy a limited risograph print here (Printed by Oddities Print) and Art by Lauren Bailey (Chaotic No Good) Limited to 30 copies, They are a three color risograph 10″ x 12.75″ print on 65 lb French Pop-Tone cardstock.
The first pressing of the record will be limited to 350 copies. With limited variants and a shirt available only during pre-orders. This is a pre-order with a ship date of mid January 2021.

3) I AM PENTAGON - Nesíla

Punk from Prague (CZ)

HOLY FIGURES, a three piece band from North Carolina whose sound is based on a convergence of influences from rock to post-hardcore, deliver on their debut EP titled "Luck of the Draw".
The release will call to mind bands such as FAR, Jawbox, and even certain eras of Deftones. "Luck of the Draw" features four tracks of post-hardcore rock that showcase the band's innate ability to balance heavy, driving rhythm without sacrificing melody. Lyrically Owen Smith, guitar and vocals, used the EP as a way of addressing past drug abuse through creative personification.
The result is songs that are both relatable and honest. HOLY FIGURES is Cody, Caleb and Owen. 8" lathe cuts and cassette tapes available at NEWMORALITYZINE.COM credits released January 6, 2021

New material from shoegaze indie-rock band Los Angeles, California, Album Numbered Days (2020 mix) release march 2021.
The Meeting Places was founded in September 2001 in Los Angeles, California by four guitarists: Scott McDonald, Chase Harris, Dean Yoshihara, and Arthur Chan. Having a shared interest in music, the three guitarists later decided to rehearse and after a few practices they recruited Yoshihara, a college friend of Harris' at the University of Arizona, to play drums. Chan then switched to bass while singer and lyricist Harris remained on rhythm guitar. Original compositions started to develop immediately — "Wide Awake," "Where You Go," and "See Through You" were the first songs written by the group.
