Singles of the Week (43//24)

1) Heavy Lungs – Get Out

News from Bristol, UK post-punk / indie-rock band...

'Get Out' is the first single from the forthcoming album 'Caviar'releases April 18, 2025

Features furious fretwork and drumming that would blow the cobwebs off your Nutribullet and the sand into everyone’s Pina Colada. Repetitive and rhythmic they generate incredible energy, and it’s hard to imagine four walls containing a frustrated Danny and his desire to escape whatever forces are attempting to contain him. The others echo him in a group, gang, terrace-like chant. Rather than a straight flashback to The Sex Pistols and 1977, this is amped-up, revved-up UK punk.
Rather than local predecessors, like The Cortinas, it’s a Cortinas 45 pitched way past plus 8… and the B-line’s far groovier. There’s a wigged-out theremin in there too, emitting weird wah-wah licks.

2) Abdomen – Yes, I don't Know

News from Netherlands noise-rock / post-punk band...

Opening with fragile, picking, floating in reverb, for a second, you’re fooled into thinking that you’re listening to a Robin Guthrie / Cocteau Twins tune. Then serrated, cyclical slashing 'serenades' Peter Van Beets’ words that are narrate the awful, crushing, gaping hole, of a lover’s passing. The cut climaxing in cathartic / agonised cries of “I can’t turn around!”. When asked about their often trance-inducing rhythms and riffs, Roel explains, “The repetitiveness, and build ups, are designed to be something to lose yourself in”, and states that this is inspired, in part, by the motorik of ground-breaking kosmische band, Neu!
